Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with a significant number of people living below the poverty line. 40% of the population live on less than £1.00 per day. At least 245 million women around the world have been widowed and more than 115 million of them live in devastating poverty including 4.7 million from Bangladesh. Widows face injustice and cultural discrimination, as well as making them extremely vulnerable. Many are still young and struggling to cope from day to day with enormous challenges.
It is said that “One who cares for widows and the poor is like those who fight in the way of Allah or those who spend their days fasting and their nights praying” (Al-Bukhari).
iQra International is providing business startup training and grants to widows in the most
remote places. However there are so many – who our funds can’t reach. We believe empowering widows can eliminate the stigma that is associated with them, and provide tangible opportunities to strengthen their lives.
